The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, has informed the general public that Nigerians applying for issuance of international passports will be charged a fee for the verification of their National Identification Number (NIN). According to the commission, Nigerians will pay a fee of N1000 (One Thousand Naira) only for NIN verification processed in Nigeria, $5 (Five United States Dollars) only for NIN verification processed in other African countries, and $15 (Fifteen United States Dollars) only for NIN verification processed in non-African countries.

This fee is to geared towards improving the quality of service, accuracy, and speed of verification of NIN, as passport of the issuance of international passport process, as well as the integration of data between the NIS and NIMC. Quoting the words of Kayode Adegoke as disclosed in the statement, “NIMC and NIS have agreed on a revised applicant journey that will significantly improve the speed of passport issuance/re-issuance and reduce the traffic visiting the NIS office(s).”

The new NIS process, including the payment of the NIN verification fees is scheduled to go live on the 1st April, 2023.
